MORTON, Ill - October and the start of the season are right around the corner. Players are working out and preparing for hockey. In my own way, so am I. Even though I am sidelined with my leg in a cast, I am getting back to hockey with Between the Lines: Not-So-Tall Tales From Ray "Scampy" Scapinello's Four Decades in the NHL by Ray Scapinello and Rob Simpson.

Between the Lines tells stories from the life of Ray “Scampy” Scapinello’s 33-year career in the NHL as a Linesman. He has officiated nearly 3,000 NHL games, as well as AHL and Olympic games and has seen the game progress through the ages and stages – from the Expansion Era to Modern Era. The man has seen a lot of hockey, and by including many of his fellow officials in this book, literally several centuries worth of hockey officiating experienced are tapped in this book.

Scampy and his co-workers were part of a lot of hockey. For instance, they didn’t just see the mayhem caused by “Broad Street Bullies” back in the 70’s, they were charged with breaking up the fights and bringing order to the ensuing chaos. Also, the men charged with breaking up the fights detail their respect for these combatants and provide a unique insight into some of these legendary pugilists.

Although the manuscript touches on more personal elements of Scampy’s life, it is mostly quote after quote from Scampy and his pals. While this is one of the strength of the book, it is also its greatest weakness. When the quotes start piling on fast, it becomes confusing, at times, as to whose book this really is. At times, it seems more like a kitchen table discussion, with some old men sitting around the table trying to top each other’s stories.

Weighing in at a light 253 pages (not including credits and pictures) and over $15 (Amazon, paperback), I can’t recommend this as a purchase, but it might be worth your while when you visit the local library.
