MANCHESTER, UK - MANCHESTER Phoenix are still in contention to retain their English Premier League crown.

That's according to player-coach Tony Hand as he prepares his side for a double test this weekend.

Phoenix are eight points behind Guildford Flames but six wins on the spin have put them right back in the hunt.

“We are having a good run and I see no reason why it should not continue,” Hand said. “We are getting ourselves into contention and there is still a long way to go.”

Manchester travel to Basingstoke Bison on Saturday (6.30pm) before hosting Milton Keynes Lightning a day later (5.30pm) – a team they have beaten twice in recent weeks.

“It will be another tough weekend,” Hand continued. “Basingstoke are always hard opponents but we have played well against them this season and the lads are in form at the moment.

“Milton Keynes are grinding out results just as we did last season and are deservedly up there.”

The Lightning are in second place, five points ahead of Phoenix who can't afford to lose any ground.

Talisman Hand won't return for the weekend's matches as he recovers from an ankle operation.

But forward Tom Duggan could make a comeback from a sprained shoulder if he is passed fit by medical officials.
