BROOKLYN, NY – The Brooklyn Aces of the Eastern Professional Hockey League captured the regular season championship Friday night with a 6-3 win over the Jersey Rockhoppers.
The win gave the Aces a 32-8-4 record and 68 points in the standings. Following Friday's action, the Aces held a 12 point edge over second place Jersey and a 13 point cushion over third place Danbury.
The Aces have been led by CJ Tozzo this season with 30 goals and 57 assists in 44 games. Tozzo, 23, last played for Plattsburgh State and has been a formidable offensive threat for the Aces. He has not been alone as Kyle McCullough has chipped in 85 points including 27 goals for Brooklyn.
McCullough last skated for Bloomington in the IHL before suiting up for Brooklyn this year.
The Aces have thrived on offense and defensive support for their goaltending tandem of Eddie Neville and Miroslav Recicar. Neville has played in 25 games and Recicar in 21 games with each posting 16 wins on the season.
With the regular season title locked up, the EPHL now awaits the conclusion to the battle for second place and the opportunity to face the Aces in the single round playoff this year. The best-of-three series will be played March 26, 27 and 28 (if necessary) at the Aviator Sports and Recreation Center in Brooklyn.
The Jersey Rockhoppers and the Danbury Mad Hatters have battled all season for the right to make it to the post season and are now separated by a single point in the standings. Jersey holds the advantage for now.
The Hudson Valley Bears, the fourth and final team to join the EPHL inaugural season battle, have never really gotten on track this season and have only 7 points in the overall standings.
With a half dozen games left in the inaugural EPHL season, there seems to be real excitement in West Orange, New Jersey and Danbury, Connecticut.
But who wants to take on the buzz saw in Brooklyn?
